Elisabetta Spigone
Elisabetta Spigone grew up close to Rome, Italy and developed a passion for science, studying Physics at La Sapienza and graduating in 2005. She first came to Cambridge in 2006 taking the opportunity to carry out her PhD in the Biological and Soft System group (BSS) at the Cavendish Laboratory, under the guidance of Professor Pietro Cicuta.
After completing her doctorate, Elisabetta spent 7 years in industry working in the Nokia Research Centre in West Cambridge on the functionalisation of nanomaterials for biosensor development. In 2016, she decided to return to the academia, joining the Scherman Group as a Group Manager taking advantage of a different perspective with her knowledge of how businesses drive research. In this role, she provides support to members of the group as they move towards their goals.
She has two lovely boys: Luca (7) and Matteo (4) who love the department, especially during Science Week, and think Chemistry is a lot of fun! Raising her 2 boys has reinforced how important it is to support people during their learning journey both from a scientific and emotional point of view.
